Backing
Most readymade frames come with either cardboard backing or treated masonite board. Although these materials are rigid enough to hold pictures behind glass, they are not ideal to place directly behind precious pieces of art for long periods of time--acid can damage art! Take a look below for different backing options that are available pre-cut and upon request.

Cotton Rag matboard is naturally acid and lignin-free, which is ideal for preservation and float matting. Available in multiple colors and textures, these pre-cut backings can be used safely to hold a piece of art in your readymade frame or as a background to your "floating" art. 4-ply mat backing can be purchased pre-cut at 4x6, 5x7, 8x10, 9x12, 11x14, 12x16, 14x18, & 16x20 sizes. Larger or custom sizes can be cut upon request.
Foamcore, which comes in 1/8" and 3/16" deep, as well as in black and in white, is a standard in picture frame backing. When all you really need is a sturdy, long-lasting material to keep your poster in place, this would be a good choice. Although better than using cardboard as backing (the corrugation lines of cardboard can cause visible acid damage to your art), foamcore is also not acid-free. Sheets of foamcore can be cut upon request.
For added support, as well as preservation qualities, we often recommend an acid-free 4-ply mat and foamcore backing combo. The acid-free mat provides assurance that your piece of art is well kept to last long, while the foamcore backing supports the entire art-mat package within the frame walls.
